Is it true that smaller quakes precede the Big One? What do you think?

First it was the devasdating fires, now, it's earthquakes. Time to call the Van Lines?

Please discuss if you live in CA what preparations you can make: Do you have an alternative road going East if the San Andreas Fault gives and the Coastal lands sink? Last week some people were worried because indicator fish (some squiggly long thing hardly ever seen) were noticed in large numbers, which happens just before disaster hits the Ring of Fire in the Northern Pacific region. Please tell us you can get out of there if the Big One destroys California as we know it. What is your Exit Strategy?

Ten earthquakes of preliminary magnitudes between 3.0 and 4.5 struck off the coast of Northern California between Saturday and Sunday, the United States Geological Survey reports.

Ten earthquakes strike the coast of Northern California in less than 24 hours
Without reading the entire thread, I lived in C. for over 40 years.
In college, forgot the what class it was, we were told that small quakes alleviate the stress along the fault line.
It's where the stress builds up without the little quakes that bring major quakes.

Thanks for the insider tip. I hope things go well for those on the West Coast who were getting shaken around a couple of days ago.

Looks like the California Coast is clear for now, but here's an update with two more different areas--4.0-9, orange 5.0 or higher, red.

Looks like el Temblor is not done with California yet. There's been a lot of trouble in the spillway area, though.
I guess you'd have to know where the volcanoes are, but Old Illiamna would be volcanic in nature. Active, of semi-active volcanoes make a lot of movement. But volcanoes are all a part of the tectonic "ring of fire" that causes earthquakes, too.
This morning, I thought the threat of "the Big One" had vanished, but another small group of the shakes in the northwestern corner of Oregon seems to be stretching, too. It'd be nice if there were never a "big one" anywhere, I think you're right on, but the map is showing places I'd never suspect would be shaken. It probably fits in with some larger pattern, so if anyone has expertise in vulcanology or seismology, chine in, please.

Meantime, I'll follow this a few more hours, or anyone else can who'd like to visit the site, please feel free to take the baton and run with it. ;)

Does anyone know whether periods of forest burns can be related to earthquakes or other seismological events?

There may have been an error in my post above (#49) when I wrote "northwest corner of Oregon," I pretty sure I was looking at the map of northwestern California. Too late to edit that. Apologize for the error.

Just in: A New Earthquake App for those who live in Los Angeles, California: L.A. Mayor Eric Garcetti Officially Introduces County’s New Early Warning Quake App

Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti officially announced the launch of the county’s new early warning earthquake app Thursday.

ShakeAlertLA, which is designed to work with the United States Geological Survey’s earthquake early warning system, is the nation’s first publicly available early warning mobile app.

The app was released unannounced on New Year’s Eve, but was quickly discovered by users who shared the news, the Los Angeles Times reported.

It is designed to warn the public about earthquakes with a magnitude 5.0 or higher a few seconds before the shaking arrives.

“We believe it will make Angelinos safer. It will save lives by giving precious seconds to you and to your family to take action and to protect yourselves when the next magnitude 5.0 earthquake or bigger hits … this technology is truly cutting edge,” Garcetti said during a news conference at City Hall Thursday.

The warning system should allow enough time for trains to slow, cars to avoid entering bridges or tunnels, and for people to take cover under a desk, the shakealert.org website stated.

The alerts apply to Los Angeles County only, according to the app.

Exit Strategy?

Smile as you go under, you crazy liberal bastards.... congratulations Arizona, you now have beachfront property
Not all Californians are liberal, easy 65. Ronald Reagan was a conservative Republican who served from 1981-1989. I pray that our liberal adversaries and friends have a change of heart about taking America down the Marxist road. I pray that we once again become a unified nation, and I hope we can do that without being involved in a full-scale global war in which the truly bad governments in the world turn their attention on murdering the people in their own countries while nobody's watching. I know people here in Texas who went to battle fires in California last year. It was hell by all means, but the brotherhood of one American group for another was there without the anger people feel when they have been politically betrayed. The way we accomplish that is to knuckle under, develop a thick skin, and fight fires for friendship. Greater love hath no man than he that lays down his life for another. That's exactly what the firemen of many states who travelled to California did. So in the spirit of the First Responders of America, I salute brotherhood, even whether they are fighting fires together to save lives and properties of people they do not know, or whether they are engaged in a fair debate to decide an outcome for our nation. Should we pray for more fires that brotherhood may abound? God forbid, but I'm thankful to know that when Yellowstone was burning back when, California sent its fair share of Firemen there who put their lives on the line so that the entire nation could enjoy the surrounding areas of famous Lodges, Old Faithful, and just about anywhere they could make a difference for feeding the bears, moose, bison, elk, and caribou that live and breed there, although almost every year, 2 million people visit their nation's fabulous national park. Foreign visitors also come to see the awesome phenomena of geysers, mudpots, and amazing wildflowers that bless the eye.

Maybe we can be fortunate and watch the land west of San Andreas fault turn into a new floating island that could capsize if too many people end up on it.. Take San Fran Nan and Mad Maxine with it...
Maybe we will really get lucky and for some weird reason you are there in California when it happens!

Thanks, Mods for moving the thread over here, since an earthquake can alter an environment as well as shake people up. :)

Just got through looking at the earthquake maps a couple of hours ago, Last night it was small potato jiggles in California and most of the ones in Alaska weren't too bad.
No temblors more than 3.0 Richter Scale in California and Utah. The largest in Alaska was at Buldir Island (far west, Aleutian Island) and the others were lesser also. Up to this minute. Latest Earthquakes

To bad for Hawaii, Japan, and the rest of the Pacific islands if it happens...the resulting tsunami would be beyond anything that has been seen on earth for a very long time..

Best of luck with that Ms Beautress. Earthquakes are scary things if you're not sitting in the middle of a wheat field. I went through a 6.3 in San Diego sitting on the 6th floor of a 10 story hotel and thought how unpleasant it would be if the building collapsed. Keep the kids ready to run outside ASAP. Fingers crossed.
