I've see it done at the California State Fair. The audience participants were selected by the hypnotist, so everyone on stage went under. He asked some questions of everyone, had people raise their hands, went to various sections, and he selected what appeared to be random members from that group including a couple of children. From the vid, I could not open my eyes, but thought it was okay and continued to hear his voice. I could not follow everything he said, so that broke the chain of being under his suggestions. I think Benjamin Franklin thought it didn't work on everybody so that's why he ended up thinking Mesmer was a fraud. Mesmer had some weird beliefs and upset the status quo so that was probably another reason the authorities thought he was a charlatan.
