Iranian fans BOO their own anthem before World Cup game with England

Iran's players refused to sing the national anthem as boos rung out from the stands ahead of their first game of the World Cup against England in Qatar today.

Astonishing scenes. I noticed the Iranian women holding up placards protesting the regime as well. The Mullahs have a huge problem here.

Most of these folks wanted to wear, or carry, a Persian flag to the game, but were barred from entering. The Persian flag has same colors, but a lion and a sun, instead of the Muslim crescent, on it, and Qatar would not allow any of them in the stadium with these flags or T-shirts on.

i'd have to see the reaction to know. Do players usually sing or just stand for their anthems? Fans booing is fine, if the fans were actually Iranian, which seems at odds with them traveling to another country to watch their country representatives play soccer.

We should all hope for freedom for citizens everywhere. Iranians have been suffering for a long time. So have many Canadians for the record...

The soccer world would do itself a favor by airing the world cup games at a more reasonable time for us in the states....

This was courageous action. Women are the oppressed group of the world, historically and continuing today. This should be our primary focus. If we can't even provide equality for the majority, how can we have it for minorities?
