Influential Ecologist Predicts Human Population Will Collapse This Century
30 Oct 2023 ~~ By Ross PomeroyFor 99.9% of Homo sapiensâ 250,000 years on planet Earth, our population has remained below one billion individuals, and for much of that time, our speciesâ growth curve was relatively flat. Since 1800, however, the human population has exponentially ballooned to 8.1 billion from just under one billion. We now occupy almost all parts of the globe and ravenously consume resources beyond what Earth can sustainably provide for the long term.
As eminent ecologist William E. Rees argues in an ominous new paper, this is a recipe for impending disaster.

Reesâ painfully simple proposition in his new paper is that humans are no different from any other species. Thus, we are just as vulnerable to population busts as we are prone to booms. âHomo sapiens is an evolving species, a product of natural selection and still subject to the same natural laws and forces affecting the evolution of all living organisms,â he wrote.
And make no mistake, we are at the peak of a boom on the precipice of a bust, he says. Human populationâs 700% rise, along with a 100-fold expansion of real world product, over the last two centuries are anomalies unlocked by rampant use of fossil fuels, deforestation, mining, and arable land destruction. This has propelled us into an ecological state of âovershoot,â where we are consuming more resources than can be replenished and producing more waste than can be handled by ecosystems. The only question is when humanityâs bubble will collapse. Rees portends it will happen in our lifetimes.
âThe global economy will inevitably contract and humanity will suffer a major population âcorrectionâ in this century,â he wrote.
~Snip~âAs parts of the planet become uninhabitable, we should expect faltering agriculture, food shortages, and possibly extended famines. Rising sea levels over the next century will flood many coastal cities; with the breakdown of national highway and marine transportation networks other cities are likely to be cut off from food-lands, energy, and other essential resources. Some large metropolitan areas will become unsupportable and not survive the century.â

Still, Reesâ arguments should not be ignored entirely. The accomplished ecologist has distinguished himself through decades of scholarship. He also draws on history to correctly note that many major civilizations throughout human history have collapsed and suffered die-offs, often stemming from ecological overshoot within their respective habitats. He believes that, if we arenât careful, the same will happen again. Letâs be sure to prove him wrong.
Commentary:
There's a myriad of theories both religious and scientific out there regarding the demise of the Human population.
It's not climate Change we have to worry about. It's over population.
Muslims and the Chinese may soon be the answer to reducing the worlds population by starting another war.
In actuality Fauci and his Asian friends in Wuhan may have started the ball rolling.
Personally, I think predictions based on politically biased assumptions are pretty much useless. I don't believe I'll be around to see it happen.
