Actually, those that follow God are the ones are routinely targeted for murder.
Jesus once said, "Therefore this generation will be held responsible for the blood of all the prophets that has been shed since the beginning of the world", in Luke 11:50.
And as we saw with Christ, he too was thrown to the wolves along with the 12 disciples and along with the early church.
What came later was horrific in terms of the gospel being subverted into human political power grabs, by persecuting Jews, persecuting anyone who disagreed with the church via inquisitions as they were burned at the stake, or Crusades to loot the Holy Land. Naturally, you could count them as no different that the prophets of old and the early Christian movement. This all happened once the Pope became a worldly political power piece, something Jesus never aspired to as he declined the masses trying to make him a worldly king time and again.
And why is this? Why do people of God have a target on their backs as Jesus once said, if they did this to me, they will do this to my followers? In fact, having that target on your back may be the evidence that you are a follower of Christ. It is because the truth offends. It should offend all of us. The difference between the world and the Christian is, the Christian accepts the truth and lets the surgeon use his blade to help save us rather than opposing the truth so that the same blade must cut us down for rejecting reality.
