If you could immigrate or live for a short time in another country which ones would they be?

In 2023, while visiting Spain during my wife’s two weeks off teaching for Spring Break, we came to Spain. SPOILER ALERT: She is a native born Spaniard, and we have been married 36 years, living in the USA from 1989 to 2023. I always toyed with the idea of moving to Spain, and was checking out real estate (local Spain) before we started the trip. I found a home which piqued my interest, and when we got here, asked my bride to call the agent, as I wanted to see the property. She did, and we did. And I fell in love when we drove through the electric gate and a mature palm tree was in the yard. I have been retired since 2020, she was still teaching, and we were only going to be in Spain for two weeks. But it was too good to pass up. We had to put a €15,000.00 NON REFUNDABLE deposit on the property…And did. Now the fun part, deciding how we were going to fund the rest and what we were going to do?

A. Stay in the USA (she wanted to work one more year) or…

B. Liquidate everything and move to Spain.

We chose B. We were able to sell the USA home at a nice profit and cobble enough cash to pay for the Spain home outright. We sold or gave away virtually all of our 33 years of marriage in the USA. Home, vehicles, furniture…GONE.

We moved into our home not far from the beach in June 2023 and have NOT REGRETTED ONE DAY of the decision.

Cost of living is WAY DOWN.

I am now a ā€œpermanent residentā€ with health care benefits, which is HUGE. And I have used the ā€œSocialized Medicineā€ which spooks those in the USA who don't know any better…It’s GREAT. Go to the hospital (I recently broke my collarbone), they mend you up, and you walk out the door not taking a dime out of your pocket. Prescription medication…The USA is getting TORCHED by big pharma. A 30 day prescription for BP meds is under €1. I’m always amazed when I leave the pharmacy how the same drugs I paid for in the USA are so inexpensive. Utilities, food, drinking / dining out…All less expensive than the USA…And you don’t have to worry about that 20% tip.

I / we wake up every day smiling, live in a mostly warm climate 365 days a year, don’t have to worry about getting shot just going to the grocery store. Low crime, and friendly people.

I haven’t regretted ONE DAY of the decision to leave the USA and in the three times we went back to take care of business, couldn’t wait to get on the plane for the return to Madrid.

It’s not for everyone, and I had the advantage of being married to a native. Money helps. If you’re sitting with €500,000.00 doing nothing and want to invest in a property in Spain, they will ā€œgolden visaā€ you (and spouse) and establish your residency and health care coverage right out of the box without having to be married to a native for 36 years.

I think right before the shit hits the fan I will take my family to Fiji. One of the smaller islands. Get a small house on the beach and a mid-sized boat.

With the growing antisemitism in many countries I would have previously considered - such as England or Australia - ive reevaluated options: Panama tops the list. Very affordable, lovely beaches, and a practicing Jewish community.

If western Canada secedes, I would wait to see their new constitutions.

Other than that, I have no desire to live someplace that isn't covered by the Bill of Rights.

Singapore has the lowest crime rate in the world.

Panama is great for observant Jewish ex-pats. They have kosher grocery stores, and many kosher restaurants. Obviously, a choice of synogogues.

What was so funny about Panama? They’re not antisemitic like Australia and England as a result of all the Muslim immigrants streaming in.
Only a Chump's whim from invasion.

Still not sure what you mean, but it’s so dangerous for Jews in Australia now that one weekend the police told Jews they would only be safe if they stayed in their homes. And the U.K. - well, they’ve turned into major Jew-haters. Even on this forum, most of the worst antisemites are posting from the U.K.

Panama is lovely.

I revel in the atmosphere in Western Europe, with Germany, Austria, and Denmark at the top of my list.

I'm too old now, but if I were younger and single, I would go to Germany, total immersion.
