Amid shutdown, Trump administration guts department overseeing special education​

Sweeping layoffs announced Friday by the Trump administration landed another body blow to the U.S. Department of Education, this time gutting the office responsible for overseeing special education, according to multiple sources within the department.

The reduction-in-force, or RIF, affects the dozens of staff responsible for roughly $15 billion dollars in special education funding, and for making sure states provide special education services to the nation's 7.5 million children with disabilities.

I applaud Trump in foreign agendas to try for peace. Since Covid the world is destabilizing even more, and the previous administration helped it along. Domestically the previous administration allowed to many people to enter the nation in a more austere time. This helped to cause the yearly deficits to reach two trillion dollars a year.

Caring for and educating disabled children is VERY expensive. I know this first hand. If this responsibility is passed down to the states it will be a race to the bottom. Progressive/wealthier states will step up but others will step back so families that need these services will have to consider moving to a state that offers more support. I know I would have thought long and hard if I was in that position. If it becomes to onerous, even progressive states will have to cut services.

Most republican states have expanded the available work hours for kids as young as 14 to school nights and removed the requirement to be home by 7pm so there is no shortage of work hours for them. This new generation is lazy.
