I wouldn't actually look to the Washington Post for an objective evaluation of the case.

Although the lavish gifts smell bad, "corruption" is quid pro quo, and there is no apparent "quo" here. What benefit was conferred? Did he get contracts, tax breaks, subsidies, or relief from oppressive regulation?

None of the above.

Many politicians move in circles of Rich Bastards, and the compensation for an elected office may not be sufficient for them to move in those circles anymore, so rich friends provide lavish gifts and favors. It stinks, but unless there are benefits conferred in exchange for them, there is no harm to the taxpayers.
