Boomers like me were educated by survivors of the Great Depression. They warned us regularly about the dangers of the state. In those days, education was not a propaganda platform for state infrastructure as it is now.

Technological innovations of the information age have brought many wonderful things into our lives. I can type and make corrections effortlessly even with the rudimentary skills I possess as a 73-year-old citizen. I can send my thoughts at the speed of light to others. I feel empowered, but at the same time very afraid of what this magnificent technology could evolve into. Everything is enhanced to a degree that frees it from the restraints of time and space. That is what makes it is so dangerous. Those with power could monopolize it and deny it to others. The technology is neutral but wicked motivations could harness it.

Do you recall an idiom you would hear as a Boomer on the street ad infinitum? “Hey, it’s a free country!” You will not hear it now; it is an anachronistic relic of a time that has gone the way of the rumble seat. This last presidential election has solidified a paradigm that establishes “state speech”. Now I know why they made us read Orwell’s 1984 and Animal Farm. It may not be long before these books, along with Ray Bradbury’s Fahrenheit 451, could be banned. Cynical? I think not.

I believe I should be able to freely express my opinions, but after that election I cannot chance the prospect that my children or grandchildren could be punished and impoverished for something I might say on an opinion page in this paper. You are witness to what is unfolding; it is ugly, and it should have been predictable.

If someone makes a charge of any kind against you, you immediately contact your attorney. Not tomorrow, not in a couple of days, not a couple hours from the time the charge was made, you do it immediately. Right that minute.

You have a right to defend yourself against the frivolous antics of Internet brown-shirts who don't think things through very thoroughly before opening themselves up to liabilities they clearly aren't prepared to defend themselves against. Make a note of when it happens. Where specifically it happens. One of the first things an authoritarian government must do to succeed is to brand actual democracy as dangerous and supplant it with “State Democracy”. The kinds of people that gravitate into politics and achieve power do not trust the people to make choices for leadership. State media then energized propaganda campaigns disguising news reporting as dispassionate observation when in fact the entire infrastructure of major television network journalism has been infiltrated with the ideological goals of the state.

American television has become “State Television” and cable news has reduced authentic press in America to promotional platforms for the state’s interests. The people figured that out which explains the results of the 2016 presidential election. It was clear to the state that the people needed to be taught a lesson.

The rise of social media sites with bags of lobbying gold to influence US Congress and the emergence of a global pandemic converged on the people in a perfect storm of authoritarian good fortune. This allowed the state to choreograph mob violence in the streets and masquerade it as peaceful protesting. Racism, that had all but disappeared in America, was exhumed and billboarded as systemic. The challenging leader was then smeared as a demon of a new and improved McCarthyistic racial struggle movement.

The Capitol event was an unfortunate outcropping of a rigged election that played into the hands of the state like the Reichstag did in Germany in the 1930’s. The state is leading at the moment and the many of the rats in president’s party that have been sailing the ship are now jumping off in a mutinous escape to save their own necks. Now we must prepare for what is coming.

This is not going to end well for people who long for real freedom and democracy. Liberty? That won’t be missed till it is gone-and it is going.
