I am close to being 90 so can explain past history. When WW2 was going on, not all had good jobs. We had this collection of misfits known as Hobos. They normally would be found close to water, a lake or river, to get water to drink. They would often knock on doors and ask the owner to give them a short job, such as mowing a lawn. Since they offered to work, and did not seem drug ridden at the time, owners often gave them short term jobs since they worked in the war effort and had plenty of money to help hobos with.

We do not currently see a massive war effort like we had in WW2. Then it was clear we were in war, and I mean we saw war planes all the time and convoys of jeeps and tanks. We lived on rations. Today Americans have little clue what rations is.
Then the media was friendly to Government, I blame communists a bit for the fact that the media now hates government.

I have some old SF and SF bay area newspapers from the 1940's. Reading those papers really puts one into the history of the time. It was clear that America was totally united in the war effort and there was a real sense of dread if we didn't beat the Axis powers.
