Gun violence is a problem, no one can deny this. But do we have a clear understanding of what the problem actually is? It's hard to address a problem if we don't know what it actually is. This requires a careful study of each gun violence event, the case history thereof. We have not done this. Instead, we are painting a hazy picture of the problem with a large, cheap, brush and offering radical, knee jerk, solutions that can't be agreed upon by any two people.
It may be that upon careful examination the gun violence problem not only might be less serious than most believe, but that reasonable means of reducing it are well within reach and budget.
We have around 40,000 gun deaths per year. Examining each case shouldn't require much more effort than reading a large book, especially if those cases are categorized and collated properly.
All we need is this information gathered in one place and free for anyone to access. Only then can we understand the problem.
