I saw a mid-1800s ancestry map once that showed the people in area I live in, and much of Appalachia, termed simply as Americans.

Makes sense as in just the small valley (Fort Valley, Virginia) my dad grew up in there were English, Belgian, German, Irish, and Scottish ancestry present.

Most of those people's families have been here for centuries. I have one ancestor that came here in the 1870's, and the rest came during the 1920's, so I am 4th generation to 2nd generation born in the US, a relative newcomer.

The interesting thing is many black Americans have centuries of ancestry here in this country as well, just like the white Appalachians.
