I know to most people living now, my time in college was in the dark ages. But in my small country college of between 2,000 and 3,000 students, we were required to treat faculty, visitors to campus--most especially those invited to campus as speakers or whatever--and each other with proper respect. Any student(s) who presumed to stage a protest denigrating any person, group, race, ethnicity, organization or whatever I am pretty sure would have been expelled. It simply would not have occurred to us.
Among speakers invited to campus were Communist Russians and other Marxists, Birchers, I think there was one representative of the KKK, women's rights advocates, leftists, rightwingers, the gamut of the sociopolitical spectrum as well as some informative historians, scientific types, et al. No professor even suggested how we were to regard the message of any of them. Our speech was not suppressed in any manner other than we were expected to be properly courteous to them and each other and hear them out. Then in various appropriate classes we would be encouraged to talk about what we heard and utilize critical thinking to evaluate it.
Black students, Asian students, Jewish students, gay students, all students of whatever skin color, ethnicity, creed etc. were safe among us.
IMO colleges and universities should not be receiving federal funding at all, but if they are going to get it, a rule of tempered free speech and courtesy to all should be the criteria. That would take care of antisemitism and a lot of other uglies too.
