How to be a Gentleman

certainly not doing the whole looking a female up & down bullshit.

Here's what GQ has to say about it: GQ’s 125 Rules for Modern Gentlemen

Some of the basics like holding open a door, walking on the traffic side of a sidewalk, etc. are obvious. Some are things that people don't seem to remember anymore such as a man not wearing a hat indoors.
Can you give a compelling argument for why it should be considered ungentlemanly to wear a hat indoors? "Tradition" is not a compelling argument. People once thought that throwing salt over your shoulder was the way to handle bad luck, but not anymore. Traditions change over time. Why should wearing a hat indoors in 2025 be an issue?

And THAT ^^^ is why you are no gentleman.

There was a sign in the club on base:

“He who enters covered here buys the bar a round of cheer.”

do say 'bless you' after someone sneezes?

Agreed. The hat thing bugs the the crap out of me. Dad would have slapped the hat off off my head if I wore it indoors.

& it's patriotic to take the f'n thing off when the national anthem is played.

No, i dont do that. I believe the root of that phrase comes from a LONG time ago when people believed that you could accidentally sneeze out your soul.

I heard it was because people believed your heart temporarily stopped when you sneeze.

Here is what Google AI says. It has changed over time.

The phrase "bless you" after a sneeze originates from ancient beliefs that a sneeze could be a sign of impending death or the soul's escape from the body, with the blessing serving as protection against spirits or as a prayer during disease outbreaks like the bubonic plague, which Pope Gregory I is said to have encouraged. In ancient times, a sneeze was feared as a moment the soul could leave the body or evil spirits could enter. The blessing was a way to prevent the spirit's exit or to ward off evil spirits. During the bubonic plague, the custom was reinforced by Pope Gregory the Great, who reportedly asked people to offer a blessing to protect the sneezer from the disease.

Here are the two main theories for the origin of "bless you":
1. The Soul and Evil Spirits

  • Ancient beliefs:
Many ancient cultures believed the soul was associated with the body's head and that a sneeze might accidentally expel it, leaving the person vulnerable.
  • Protection:
Saying "bless you" was a prayer for divine protection to prevent the soul from leaving the body or to keep evil spirits from entering the body during this vulnerable moment.
2. The Bubonic Plague
  • Pope Gregory I:
During a plague outbreak in Rome around 590 AD, sneezing was a possible symptom of the disease.
  • A plea for protection:
Pope Gregory I supposedly urged his followers to say "God bless you" after someone sneezed as a quick prayer to protect them from the potentially deadly illness.

it also shows a bit of kindness & human connection, especially if it's said to a stranger.

What about baseball caps? I think some guys wear them indoors. Do they count as hats?

Also, I don't understand the walking on the traffic side when on side-walk thing. Why do men have to walk on this side? Is it because it's more dangerous? But they are on a sidewalk, not in the middle of a road.
