While the OP's video is
mostly factually correct, it is spun in a way that neglects the attitudes and beliefs of the
entire global population at the time.
Judging historical actors by present day morals and ethics is a disservice to those who really want to understand history. It is something know as,
"historical revisionism," and it is done to further political goals, not to educate people about the past. The Soviets engaged in that sort of nonsense all the time.
This one is FAR, FAR more accurate IMO.
The Mexican-American War Explained in 13 Minutes
While the territory that the war started in was disputed territory, what both videos fail to mention, is there was never a stable Mexican government, nor any Mexican politicians that ever wanted to resolve the issue peacefully. The first video makes Polk look like he had no desire to settle the issue peacefully. The war greatly eroded the Democrats political capital, leading the subsequent Whig victory with one of the greatly lauded heroes of that war, Zachery Taylor.
Likewise, it was indeed Mexico that shed first blood and started the war.
General Taylor (a whig,) had explicit instructions NOT to engage with the enemy, even if they entered the disputed territory until a diplomatic solution was found. The only exception of course, is if they were fired upon.
Mexican generals at that time were bloodthirsty and vainglorious, many going on to rule through force of violence and arms. Is it any surprise that they started this?
Both armies had an international legal right to be in that territory, it was NOT officially known as a "neutral zone," thus, it was Mexico that started the war.
