He was in fact a Minister, ordained. Regardless, the Christians fought to end slavery, you democrats fought to promote it.

So did 'native americans', africans, asians, and every other non-white, non-christian peoples on the face of the Earth, almost all pagans of one stripe or another.

The only peoples who started an anti-slavery movement of any note were white Christians in Europe, and the Calvinists on the Hudson River Valley and the Quakers in Pennsylvania here. No atheists could be bothered by such notions then, or before or after; atheists are the most tolerant of people, as they will tolerate almost anything that doesn't harm them personally; no 'great causes' for them.
