Even if we'd matched Germany, where the death toll was 11.72 per 100,000 residents, we'd still have seen fewer than 40,000 deaths. Instead, the number of deaths in the United States is the highest in the world, and among the highest when controlling for population.
Yes it is clear most countries have handled it better than the USA both health wise and economic consequences.
Trump has been a catastrophically bad leader on this issue and it more than any other issue is the reason he will most likely lose a Presidency he was probably sure to win before his disastrous pandemic responses.
