How God works in our lives

In this account Jesus and the disciples were on the Sea of Galilee and a violent storm comes up suddenly. The Sea of Galilee is the lowest freshwater lake on earth at approximately 210 m (700 ft) below sea level. It is longer than it is wide. At its widest points, the lake measures 21 km (13 mi) from north to south and 12 km (7.5 mi) from east to west and is surrounded by hills. The elevation, shape and contour of the lake make it susceptible to storms. Violent storms do "roll" in there suddenly. They even have a name for it. They are called Sharkias.

"...Such storms result from differences in temperatures between the seacoast and the mountains beyond. The Sea of Galilee lies 680 feet below sea level. It is bounded by hills, especially on the east side where they reach 2000 feet high. These heights are a source of cool, dry air. In contrast, directly around the sea, the climate is semi-tropical with warm, moist air. The large difference in height between surrounding land and the sea causes large temperature and pressure changes. This results in strong winds dropping to the sea, funneling through the hills. The Sea of Galilee is small, and these winds may descend directly to the center of the lake with violent results. When the contrasting air masses meet, a storm can arise quickly and without warning. Small boats caught out on the sea are in immediate danger..."

More Than a Fisherman

So the setting for this account is valid. In the account, Jesus is sleeping while His disciples are panicking. They couldn't understand how He could be sleeping while their lives were being threatened. That's how most people see God. He's not there when they are going through the storms of their lives.

God is a Master Gardner. He uses it all but does His best work when we are suffering. It's like pruning a bush. Some branches are thin and snap right off. Others are thicker and have to be sawed off. Some hurt more than others. At first it looks like crap. All sparse and twiggy, but then as the new growth occurs it comes in more full and looking better looking than before. He uses it all to progress us and for the one's who know how it works they have peace through the storms to the point they are not storms. But for everyone else they will be holding on for dear life like Rembrandt not understanding how God is working in their lives.

Nice analogy and allegory, ding

When people try to blame all manner of evil on Christianity and religion, for abusing power to commit mass genocide and other wrongs,
I also compare it to water and the ocean:

Sure, one could blame WATER and NATURE for the destructive TSUNAMIS and FLOODS that destroy lives and everything in their paths.

However, the same forces of nature and the role that WATER plays
ALSO BRING LIFE that DEPENDS on water to survive.

So how can you only look at the DESTRUCTION causes by Water and forces of nature running far out of control where they KILL masses of people.

And not also consider the GIFT of life that water and nature provide?

Can we look at religion the same way: as much destruction and suffering as it causes when extreme conditions reel out of control,
what about the greater good from religious teachings and traditions?
Sure. God gets all of the blame and none of the credit.
So god is responsible for drowning people at sea? And then there was the flood, where he purposely killed tons of people. Kinda like Hitler.

Perhaps you should study up on why God created the flood and then comment.

You may also want to look at why Sodom and Gommrah were destroyed...look for the common link between the two.

God has rules...after all we are His children

Yes and no Mudda
(1) RE: murder, killing and death
(A) if we understand God to be Nature or Life
then the cycles of birth life and death are natural
(B) for "murder" this implies some ill will, vengeful
angry or hateful intent. So would you consider that
when tsunami's or earthquakes kill masses of people,
that is "God being vengeful" or is the natural consequences
of overpopulated areas and nature's way of keeping that in check.

(2) as for homosexuality do you mean
(a) God having both male and female attributes and energy
(b) or the love between people include same sex relationships

If you think of the human spirit being "bispiritual" where
male and female sides are in balance, this is restoring
the natural relationship and isn't about unnatural lust
or coveting for control or domination.

Mudda I am guessing you are criticizing UNNATURAL
actions or relations that have been attributed to God.

What about the natural laws and relationships,
wouldn't that be more consistent with what God represents?

As for the unnatural, this is like the consequences or karma
from previous unnatural actions. How much of that is man's
doing? If you throw a bunch of garbage in the dishwasher,
it's going to create a huge mess. You can't blame it on the
cycles and how the dishwasher works because that's how
it's designed - to spin and do its thing. The problem is if
you put garbage in you get garbage out.

Well by the laws of nature if man does horrible things
then the consequences that result can escalate and
become the vicious cycle of war and genocide we
see in human history which the Bible captures in symbolism.

The OT is the stage of "retributive justice" and trying to
live under those conditions, which brings death and destruction
AS A CONSESQUENCE of past retributive actions in cycles.

The NT is the stage of "restorative justice" and respect
for the spirit of the laws, which is love of truth justice and peace.
If we put good intentions and good actions into the same
system, then the outcome is positive. But first, we still have
to clean out the OLD garbage still recycling from the past.
Eventually the good investments will overcome the bad
residue from the past, provided we agree no longer to go that
route and add more garbage to the system.

So God's laws of justice are about getting back what we give.
Those are natural laws of cause and effect, reaping what
we sow, or karma. And the purpose of these consequences
both good or bad, is to teach us by experience and example.

So we learn the difference and learn to work with the laws
of justice and nature instead of working against them
which leads to the death and destruction you blame on God.

So I need a rule for them.

both good or bad, is to teach us by experience and example.

So we learn the difference and learn to work with the laws
of justice and nature instead of working against them
which leads to the death and destruction you blame on God.
God murdered tons of people in the flood, and on purpose.
God threw Adam out of Eden for having sex with the woman, instead of staying in gay heaven with god.

If that is how you want to see it.

Translation into real terms of human history:

A. RE Adam and Eve
i have found 3 key interpretations of what this allegory refers to, and all 3 are about historical changes in human development and stages
1. the shift from matriarchal to patriarchal social structures and political/tribal authority
(ie before Eve there was Lilith, the Matriarchal and earth-based religions where the tribes worshipped natural forces and energy. because power and ownership was passed from mother to daughter, mothers knew who their children were and societies were more egalitarian and agriculturally based. However with the shift to Patrilineal inheritance and "primogeniture" where power and estates were passed from father to son, the men had to CONTROL their lineages to ensure their children were really theirs, so this is where the laws came from that control women and children as "property of the estate" including laws on marriage and adultery that are meant for men to control other men to "protect their property" including their lineages.

So this is where a shift occurred where all the legalism and materialism came from, trying to control people and property by legal and political power, etc.

2. Obedience to parental, religious or govt authority for social order vs. development by individuals and cities into independence and self-governing sovereign communities.

Originally in earlier stages of human development, the individuals rely on an external authority to govern so that collectively there is law and order.

Once people start to develop greater self-awareness, autonomy and ability to take on responsibilities for self-reliance and sustainable self-government then this changes.

Like a parent child relationship that starts as "dependent" where for SAFETY and security the younger kids MUST OBEY PARENTS by blind faith and obedience, this eventually grows into semi-independence and later full maturity in adulthood where individuals should be able to manage themselves and/or their own households, and later train their own children to run their own households, or in society, mentor other leaders to take over managing whole businesses, cities or govts.

So this process of moving from blind faith/obedience/reliance on outside authority
TO
self-reliance and self-govt
is symbolized by the OT and NT,
breaking free from the old ways and learning
to manage by free will and mature conscience instead of relying on just a parental authority making and imposing decisions FOR people. the point is to grow to independence and liberation where we can govern ourselves more autonomously, but still respect the laws and order for stable civil society.

3. the shift from agricultural cultures to a class system where the smaller elite class of owners and managers have greater value and power than the larger class of manual laborers and agrigultural and other workers.

This change is described as starting when MEN as the meat hunters who went out to hunt and fight for resources were WORSHIPPED as more valuable in their roles and the meat or goods they collected and more powerful in influence, than the women or other workers who gathered crops in the field seen as more common and plentiful and not as valuable.

So this represents the class division and inequality in power/value/control in society between the ownership/management of MEAT and other storage/distribution of resources vs. the workers and manual labors who don't own or control distribution.

The symbolism of Adam and Eve "biting into the apple" and 'falling out of the garden of paradise" has been interpreted in this way also: that in turning focus of value onto to MATERIAL goods and consumption, this created HUMAN INEQUALITY. People were AWARE of the difference in value, and it started down the path of inequality, injustice and more powerful owners and elite oppressing others treated as less valuable and less than equal.

==========

so Mudda all 3 interpretations above
explain part of the social phenomena that makes people treat each other unequally, and thus causes strife and suffering in relations.

Instead of living in harmony and having good working relations, we have conflicts and "fall outs" that cost us on all levels of physical and social ills.

So the point of the story is to recognize what changes in SELF AWARENESS or KNOWLEDGE of the laws started humans on the path of inequality and controlling things by material means and laws.

B. Mudda as for the killing and genocides, floods, etc.

This represents the turmoil crisis and catastrophes from living out of harmony with the natural laws of life and peace with all living things in the universe.

This is the old ways of the past, and not something we want to keep repeating.

When we make the decision to live in harmony and peace, then all this changes.

The metaphor of blaming this on a personal God is just that, a symbolic metaphor representing the thought process of man.

if we take responsibility for solving problems, we change this paradigm and relationship.

if we continue to reject responsibility and project blame, this suffering continues to go in endless circles.

Life is not a game to be won by deflecting blame.
So what you see and describe is a phase that humanity goes through to learn to deal with life by experience.

Since what you say is clearly negative and conflicted, that clearly is not the solution, then the message is basically "none of these old ways make sense" and all that has to change.

So what you are saying and assessing is basically coming to the same conclusions about the OT "not working" but just leading to "death and destruction."

EXACTLY

That's why humanity eventually gives up on these "old ways" and seeks and eventually receives a "new way" of approaching life that DOESN'T lead to these impossible contradictions!

We are meant to run into these walls.

You are right, it doesn't make sense.

Eventually we have to give up the old ways
and accept the fact this fails, and we need to let go and find a better way to live and look at life that is consistent and not these constant contradictions that go in circles!

Rembrandt painted himself in his famous painting, "Christ in the Storm."

View attachment 119718

He's the one holding onto the mast for dear life.

View attachment 119719

SEA OF GALILEE - What's special about the Sea of Galilee? Why does it have sudden storms? • KidExplorers.com / ChristianAnswers.Net

In Modern Philosophy, God does not work in our lives at all.

In Modern Philosophy, God is a Deist God not a Theist God.

Ergo you are on your own.

Hi yiostheoy
No sorry. the world does not revolve around us and our wishes. We don't control and make all the things work and run in the world as they do.

The balance and interconnected relations between species and natural changes in the environment that make ECOSYSTEMS WORK, are something NATURE created, not humans.

yiostheoy Have you ever walked with or witnessed a friend
go through healing/recovery from abuse, addiction or loss of a loved one?

the CHOICE to FORGIVE speeds up the process of healing.
this is a CONSCIOUS choice, totally willful, that we must
make VOLUNTARILY or it isn't real, and unwillingness to forgive
but to hold on to negative pain and feelings can OBSTRUCT
the process of healing and moving forward in life.

so this PROCESS has EVERYTHING to do with whether
we CHOOSE TO WORK WITH the natural healing process
of life. that's what it means to FORGIVE in order to RECEIVE
GRACE. if we don't forgive which is a CONSCIOUS choice
we limit the power and ability to heal and receive/focus on the
good in life and relationships. If we are full of negative energy
and thoughts we BLOCK the spiritual healing process.

We must CHOOSE to work WITH it, not choose to block it.
