Hossfly

Hossfly and I used to message each other years ago.

He was Air Cavalry and fought in the "Battle of Ia Drang" in 1965.
Which was the first major battle between the US Army and North Vietnam Army. NVA

This engagement was said to be the blueprint for how both sides fought the Vietnam war.

If you're interested, watch the movie:
"We Were Soldiers Once....And Young"

Hossfly was flown in by an air assault helicopter and fought in that battle.

Hossfly's avatar is a picture of him.
( see post #57 )

He was a soldier with the 7th Air Cavalry.
They went into battle transported by Huey helicopters.
The large yellow patch on his right breast pocket identifies him as a member of that regiment during the Vietnam war.

The black hat Hossfly is wearing harkens back to the history of the 7th Cavalry regiment. Which was formed and commanded by General George Armstrong Custer in 1866 to fight in the American Indian Wars.

Hossfly is a bona fide America hero.

My sincere thanks and appreciation for you Hossfly for your brave service to our great country! Thank you my friend and I hope you are doing well.

I know,I have been getting prepared for this fir a long time thinking that’s what happened.he has never gone this length of time without getting back to me eventually, never.thsts just not like him.with Dale we could find out through hossfly but with hoss,we have no way of knowing.

our only hope is that the mail IS slow and has not gotten to him yet,I sent a letter to a friend of mine a few months ago and he never received it for a whole month later,we can only hope that is the case with hoss.

Gracie do you have anyway of contacting coyote? She apparently lives in Texas as well and hoss knows her in real life, they meet up once in a blue moon for a cup of coffee to rap.
She probably already is aware of our concern. I had her phone number at one time, but no longer. Staff has it, I'm sure. But if he IS deceased as I suspect....his family may have told her to not speak. She would respect their wishes.

Bones said to ask his brother. I don't remember the brothers handle here, and IIRC, he is deceased? Maybe she can elaborate?

I haven’t heard anything in a while from him. I think I have his number, I’ll look for it and give him a call.

Please do so. He's a damned good man and I would like to pray for his journey, if in fact he is journeying on...

And.

May I say that it's splendid to see that you can't edit, delete, and ban members anymore?

Carl in Michigan (poster here) found his number and did some searching on the web. I feel weird trying the phone number since there was no response to my letter. So if someone else Hossfly considers a friend wants to give it a try....pm him (Carl). LA RAM FAN Coyote etc.
If I didn't feel so paranoid about it, I would call him myself...but as I said...there was no response to my letter so maybe they would be uncomfortable with me calling too.

I wouldn’t give it a second thought you hadn’t heard from hoss yet,I just checked when you made the post that you mailed the letter and that was on the 15th,it usually takes a week for the mail to go through so he could have just got it just now.it takes a week to get the letter normally and then a week to reply so you got to allow at least two weeks and it’s only been one week.

Also I said that’s how long it NORMALLY takes, well we’re not living in normal times anymore.I sent a letter to a friend of mine here who lives in my same state and he never even got it till a month later.so there’s that,we are living in crazy times, you never know he might not get the letter till a month later either same as me Gracie

What IS concerning and does concern me is thst it’s been over a month now sense he has posted,he wouldn’t just leave you,me and others at usmb he knows very well without informing us,he would never do that, that’s not how he operates.that’s what concerns me.

Hell, I only check my mailbox every few months for mail, I hate mail, then it might be a couple more months before I even go through it, unless of course, there is something there I need that I'm expecting.

If someone else is getting Hoss's mail, who knows how long it takes the PO to reroute it to them, then how long before they get around to reading and responding to it?

Hoss could have gone on a trip or maybe he is in the hospital. There are many possibilities. Unless someone responds to his mail, answers his phone or he posts back here again, it is all just speculation.

Hossfly, though I am an infrequent poster, throughout my years here, I always held a special place in my heart for the kind of man you are, a principled man of common sense, compassion, and quiet dignity. Seeing your avatar compelled me to click on your posts. I knew something of value to me is what I would find there.

Then, when one day you started an OP about a man I had never heard of, Dale Smith, I joined in and found a weekly communication with Dale, another man I had wonderful feelings about. He was living with a terminal cancer diagnosis and I loved touching bases with him on a Sunday, until I read of his passing and mourned him for a long time, after that and still to this day, often think of.

The main memory of Dale Smith and his videos always made me smile, for who was always there by his side as he bravely battled a slow and painful death each and every day? You were, Hossfly. You would travel from your town in Texas to Dale's house in Texas. You helped a beautiful man die with a best friend by his side. I, often tearfully, loved you for being there for him. "A friend in need is a friend indeed."

I'll always love you both for that short chapter in my life. Somehow, through it all, you and Dale made me a better person. We'll all meet up again, bringing a new beginning with one another.
🙏
