Good article. Did you read it all? Seems Khashoggi was a complicated figure, but his support was for moderate Islam, he turned away from bin Laden after bin Laden turned to terrorism, and throughout - from the Afghan War against the Soviets - he was a journalist.
You may not like "political Islam" or "moderate Islam" but that is hardly Al Queda Jihadist.

Rather, he took the view that “you have to deal with the moderate Islamists as a political reality or you will have to deal with the extremists. The failure to deal with the mainstream Islamists will lead to the extreme zealots taking over,” he said.

Either way - he was a journalist, and the Saudi's murdered him in their embassy in another country, and considering the Saudi elite follow and export some of the most repressive forms of Islam, it's funny the rush to support them.
