History of gun control in the USA

For any US or non-US person attempting to understand current US law and policy on guns and gun rights and gun control, this is the natural starting point.

The most profound statement on US gun ownership came from a Japanese admiral, Isoroku Yamamoto:

"In America there is a gun behind every blade of grass."

For him it was a justification of his view that America could not be successfully invaded by Japan.

Whether Chinese President Xi believes the same thing or not we do not know.

Whether Mexico or Canada has any interest in invading is unlikely.

Mexico already has, aided by Democrats who want to flood the ballot box.

Non-Americans should take note that the 2nd Amendment was ratified in 1791, yet the first federal restriction against it was not passed until 1934.

One must ask oneself if the federal government always had such authority, why did it take so long?

The words "Congress shall make no law" give a clue. In 1934 began an extended Constitutional crisis in which the federal government tried to exercise a power it never had to disarm a majority of citizens..

It has thus far failed.

Of course there are more salient and present issues related to gun rights, gun control, and self defense.

These a-priori principles are as follows:

1 - there is rampant crime in every city in America day and night.

2 - the police cannot protect you, they can only do the investigation of your death and hunt down your killers.

3 - everyone must defend themselves.

4 - pistols are the best personal defense.

5 - pistols alone cannot defend you against long guns.

6 - you need your own pistol and your own long gun.

7 - you need your own pistol on you at all times day and night.

8 - you need your own carbine assault weapon near you at all times day and night.

There are a few a-posteriori principles as well:

A - if you outlaw guns then only outlaws will have guns.

B - the only thing that can stop a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a better gun who is also a better shot.

C - you can take my gun when you peel it from my cold dead hands.
