Donald Trump articulated a robust stance against Hezbollah. āHezbollah is a menace to the Lebanese state, people and region,ā the US president said. āThe group continues to increase its military arsenal which threatens Israel.ā
In addition Trump linked Hezbollah to Iran and claimed that together they āfuel a humanitarian catastrophe in Syria. It portrays itself as a defender of Lebanese interests but its true interest is itself and its sponsor, Iran.ā
....Trump wants to make the Lebanese army into an āeffective fighting forceā but the reality is that Hezbollah increasingly controls much of the foreign and military policy of Lebanon. Trump doesnāt have a plan to disentangle that, and Hariri isnāt a partner, at the moment, in doing so.
Guns and butter
Hariri discussed the need for āsafeguarding political and economic stability while combating terrorism.ā He said that he āthanked Trump for support for our army and peace and stability along the southern border.ā
This acknowledges that Hariri, insofar as he has much of a say, wants quiet with Israel. But he needs financial assistance for the military and especially support for the Syrian refugees who are potentially a destabilizing force in Lebanon. They now make up around 20% of the country.
'Hezbollah is a menace': 5 takeaways from the Trump-Hariri Lebanon meeting
Yes, Hariri is going to need help. Yes, Hezbollah is in the government. There is no misunderstanding.
