1. the guy was a complete fraud

In fact, if you go back a billion years, when Earth was being hit by asteroids and meteors a lot more frequently than now, what survived?

The cicada.

Next time you see a cicada, remember this. You exist because cicadas survived massive meteor hits like the one that wiped out the dinosaurs...
