global cooling was blamed for this event-
1974 - Bering Sea Storm

The Bering Sea storm hit Nome, AK, on November 11-12, causing a storm surge of more than 13 feet. Water overflowed from the harbor, went over the sea wall in Nome, and rose to a depth of over 5 feet in the low lying areas of the city. This storm was the strongest in Nome's 113 years of weather records, producing the worst coastal flooding on record for the region. No lives were lost, but the flooding caused between $12 and $15 million in damages. Event History: Extratropical - Storm Surge and Coastal Inundation

the CIA pdf gives a concise description of climatology as it was understood then. a must read.

h/t to S Goddard

It is the unfalsifiable hypothesis. Cooling causes storms + warming causes storms + man exists on the earth = man's activities cause warming and cooling and storms and lack of storms and snowfall and lack of snowfall and sea level rise and lack of sea level rise, and on and on and on ad infinitum...........

No matter what happens, it has to be man and his insatiable greed that caused it.

wow! one person responded.

this is a snapshot of climate science in 1974 and the very real expectation of disaster from global cooling. it kinda disproves Old Rock's theory that only news magazines believed it.

it also uses extreme weather events to support its case just like we see today.

same shit, different pile.

The people who like to claim that the global cooling scare was just a product of the news conveniently forget that back then there was no 24/7/365 news cycle and news reporting was very serious business as contrasted to the "entertainment" news we get today.

Back then, a report from "scientists" meant the top dogs in the field as oppsed to any self proclaimed scientist with a liberal arts degree today. When newsweek, et al reported on global cooling back in the 70's it was because the coming ice age was a genuine concern among the brightest scientific minds of the day.

Of course their predictions were off because they didn't have a firm handle on exactly what factors drove the climate and to what degree they did so.......just like modern climate science. Science has little more understanding of what drives the climate today than it did then. The big difference today is the media giving the impression that climate science knows all the answers and can be trusted when they claim a coming catastrophe.

I like the opening rationale for the study --- especially the part about

* Can the Intellegience community trust the science of Climatology to forecast future changes?

I saved this gem.. My two favorite truth-erasing orgs combined in one rich farce..

while looking for something else I stumbled on this.

anybody interested in what the CIA thought about climatology back in the 'Coming Ice Age Scare'?

What good is any science theory in changing public opinion if you don't have immediate examples of how it affects the public today?

While today --- no quorum of respectable climate scientists are blaming extreme weather on GW, they've made statements of what WILL happen.. A calculated move to give the MEDIA and politicians clear license to interpret that prognosis as a green light for "seeing" things happening today..

I like you comment about this showing that the Global Cooling scare really DID exist..
Wonder if somewhere in the DOD Pentagon files --- you'd find a 197X plan for Global Cooling Contingiencies.. I'm sure it's there.. Time for a FOIA request?? Ha!!

Of course they did. That why it's called a contingency plan. And it's why they're the military and you're not.

Look at the temperature trend from 1941 to 1979. They had a great deal more reason to believe the world might be cooling off than do any of these ignorant fudpuckers today.

LOLOLOL....amazing....how many more times are you denier cult morons going to try to push this completely discredited myth? Have you no shame at all?

Abstract
Climate science as we know it today did not exist in the 1960s and 1970s. The integrated enterprise embodied in the Nobel Prizewinning work of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change existed then as separate threads of research pursued by isolated groups of scientists. Atmospheric chemists and modelers grappled with the measurement of changes in carbon dioxide and atmospheric gases, and the changes in climate that might result. Meanwhile, geologists and paleoclimate researchers tried to understand when Earth slipped into and out of ice ages, and why. An enduring popular myth suggests that in the 1970s the climate science community was predicting “global cooling” and an “imminent” ice age, an observation frequently used by those who would undermine what climate scientists say today about the prospect of global warming. A review of the literature suggests that, on the contrary, greenhouse warming even then dominated scientists' thinking as being one of the most important forces shaping Earth's climate on human time scales. More importantly than showing the falsehood of the myth, this review describes how scientists of the time built the foundation on which the cohesive enterprise of modern climate science now rests.

Yes, we were lied to back then and we are being lied to now.

Your insanely paranoid response to scientific information that you're obviously incapable of understanding is rather hilarious.

What is paranoid about knowing they were lying back then? We knew way back then that it was a lie.
So we are skeptical about being lied to again.
Man kind can not effect the climate, we are just little nothings of ants compared to Earth's Climate.
This is what the Earth does all the time, is change her climate, this is why she a living planet.

You guys are all missing a usable point. If they were fools to think the world was cooling after temperatures dropped for 38 years straight, what are you to think the last 150 year's AGW never took place because the rate of surface warming has slowed for eight years?

I guess time magazine didn't write an article back then that showed that there was a consensus.

Time Mag Flashback: 1974 Issue Warns of Man-Made 'Global Cooling' | NewsBusters

Man, too, may be somewhat responsible for the cooling trend. The University of Wisconsin's Reid A. Bryson and other climatologists suggest that dust and other particles released into the atmosphere as a result of farming and fuel burning may be blocking more and more sunlight from reaching and heating the surface of the earth.

I read your silly AMSociety article.. It's basically a biased hit piece.. Within it they give DOZENS of references to media, govt, and other statements SUPPORTING Global Cooling.. While they "analyze and review" the reasons why all these articles "got it wrong".. Funny actually.. THEN --- they decide to do their "literature" survey.. Which shows a predominance of papers advocating Global Warming. But they excluded mere conference proceedings, and INCLUDED some papers that were not peer-judged.

Meanwhile --- thanks for the chuckle.. THIS --- is what the public saw in the 70s...

Abstract (Document Summary)
"Another ice age is coming," many climatologists forecast. But no one really knows what might bring the glaciers crashing down.

MANY climatologists.. Not one. Not a few, but MANY......

That's what the public was told. The CYA AMS "study" is damage control.. Just like the "fixed" ObamaCare rollout....

Flacaltenn, for a guy that thought that Homo Sap was only 40,000 years old as a species, and claimed that 400,000 years was over half the time that the ice ages had existed, you sure continue to demonstrate your vast ignorance on all things concerning science.

Abstract. If man-made dust is unimportant as a major cause of climatic change, then a strong case can be made that the present cooling trend will, within a decade or so, give way to a pronounced warming induced by carbon dioxide. By analogy with similar events in the past, the natural climatic cooling which, since 1940, has more than compensated for the carbon dioxide effect, will soon bottom out. Once this happens, the exponential rise in the atmospheric carbon dioxide content will tend to become a significant factor and by early in the next century will have driven the mean planetary temperature beyond the limits experienced during the last 1000 years.

It turns out the CIA were also a bunch of "deniers"

Page 7 of the CIA pdf:

Early 1970s a series of adverse climactic anomalies occurred
The world`s snow and ice cover had increased by at least 10 to 15 %
In the eastern Canadian area of the Arctic Greenland, below normal
temperatures were recorded for 19 consecutive months.
Nothing like this happened for 100 years
So I guess that CIA pdf page7 quote should help settle this argument we`ve been having:
Arctic Ice Growth Since 1971 | Real Science
Arctic Ice Growth Since 1971

The next map overlays current ice extent on the 1971 map, with green representing ice present in 2013 that was not present in 1971, and red representing the opposite.

Strange how such major events can disappear without a trace with crafty statistics and a pretty graph
