june 27 2025 Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said the new name for the naval ship USNS Harvey Milk will be the USNS Oscar V. Peterson.
"We are taking the politics out of ship naming," Hegseth said in a statement to officially announce the name change.

Hegseth has vowed to uproot what he has characterized as the woke agenda from the military, restoring what he has called the "warrior ethos" and renaming the USNS Harvey Milk is part of that broader drive.
Harvey Milk was California's first openly gay politician and the ship, a fleet replenishment oiler, was originally named in his honor in 2016 under the Obama Administration.

Oscar Peterson was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor for his WWII service in the U.S. Navy, having died of his wounds during a battle after an act of self-sacrifice that saved other lives.

I don't care one way or the other if the ship is called Harvey Milk or something else. It's not a battle that I personally would have picked, however, Harvey Milk had a relationship with an underage boy. He's probably not somebody who should be martyred.

That's the one that is proven. There are multiple reports he shacked up with a 14 year old as well. There is one report he hooked up with an 11 year old, that report was disappeared from the police files before Milk ran for office.

I was acquainted with a high schooler from the 60s who was one of many that was groomed by one of his teachers. It twisted this guy up so bad that 20 years later he sat in front of a train. These scum like Milk need to be removed from history.

But they should also name a few of the future combat vessels like CUlture warships in Ian Banks novels: USS Frank Exchange of Views, USS So Much For Subtlety etc.
