Has mass media always been degenerate?

As bad as mass, consumerist media is and seems today, I've heard that much of it has been very similar since the 1800s and the Victorian era, when much of modern media, advertising and propaganda originated - what are your thoughts on this?

I agree...but it's perceived by advertisers to sell. They will always go for what sells.

There was a total war....we also had extreme censorship during WWI and WWII because we had total war going on. Companies were forced by the government to alter their products for the war effort....advertising had to have a pro-war tone to it.
