At the solstice, Xmas, etc., poor families can probably assess how much food and money they have, and how much they will need until spring. Any surplus may then be spent on a holiday celebration. For some families, that assessment will be a time of realization that they probably won't survive.

I check the sunset times EVERY DAY this time of year. I have several milestones throughout the winter.
1. Christmas: the days BEGIN to get longer.
2. Jan 1st: the day is visibly a LITTLE longer
3. February 1st: it's finally daylight out at 6:00 pm!
4. March 21: the day is now 12 hours and I'm finally happy

When it's my time, I pray I don't die in the cold, dead of winter

Give me Juneteenth over Kwanzaa every single day. Kwanzaa is a Hallmark Holiday made up by an AMERICAN communist professor. I used to feel compelled to teach about it, but no longer do. I have never had a single student of any race who celebrates it.

Whereas Juneteenth is actual, American history.
