Mach ll Goonie birds weren't a consideration at the time as the speed of sound hadn't been dealt with outside of a rocket plane.
What I was saying, too cryptically, is that since modern airliners aren't intending to perform at speeds over 700mph (at or faster than sound) they are designed to maximize performance under 700 mph.

IIRC, a couple of occasions where aircraft failure resulting in rapid dive from high altitude has seen aircraft break-up long before impact.

Yeah, because they're not aerodynamically set up for those speeds.
