Okay, so it's that time of the year when my Uncle Sam buys me a gun.

Wanting a handgun as I only have my .380
Already got enough rifles and shotguns (for now)

Will probably give the wife my .380

Thinking maybe 1911?

Suggestions? Comments?
What do ya'll carry?
Just looking personal protection stuff. No .50cal bear-hunting thing.
9mm seems overused

I don't carry, but I really like my Colt 1911. Haven't changed a thing on it, it's as stock as the day I bought it.

Your uncle buys you a gun every year on your birthday?

Could be worse. Could be neckties.

I have a 1911 because I can get it in stainless.

Otherwise, I'd have the Browning HP in .40.

Grandkids have a monopoly on the necktie market :)

The only way to go in the hot, humid South!

Thought you already owned a 1911...

In any event, agreed, if you buy a 1911, buy a Colt. I have two that have been flawless.

I carry an M&P 40 Shield, I'm a big fan of .40 S&W, I consider it an excellent self-defense round, and can recommend both.

A modification that I recommend is an ambidextrous safety. ......
This statement was next to two images and I really couldn't see the difference in the pics:
"The decision to install ambi grips on a non-ambi 1911 is not an issue of function but purely asthetic."

If "purely asthetic", like I said...I couldn't see the difference

One of my Colts is has a stainless finish – mind the corrosion, however.

Not aesthetic if you get one hand shot off.

My Marine son has a 1911. That may be what you recall.
Good friend got a .40 recently with all the bells and whistles (tactical scope, etc,,,) I think his is a S&W too. Real nice shooting gun.
I've always preferred black/matte finish, but that stainless finish really piques my interest......just like function over flash

I just bought a Sig Sauer P250 compact medium 9mm last week. Very nice pistol, very popular with police and special ops worldwide. 15 round double stack magazine. Made in New Hampshire, designed in Germany.

A 'compact' 9 could be a possibility.
Funny you mention cops, coz I asked a couple that come in the restaurant all the time what they carry and both of them carry .40s

Good advice, and if you're a civilian, DON'T chamber a round until you need to chamber a round. It takes a nanosecond. Almost all the gun accidents we read about are because some dumbass carries a pistol with a loaded chamber so their 2 year-old can shoot mommy. DON'T do that! And always use your safety.

Right. Those are generally department issued Glocks. That doesn't mean they're popular by default. They're free so I guess that makes them popular. Can't stand .40's myself.
