And as far as I know, the only time a British general was in tactical command of American troops was in the Battle of the Bulge because the First and Ninth Armies were isolated on the British side of the bulge. When ordered by Ike to counter attack, Monty sat on his hands for two days while US forces on theother side of the Bulge attacked unsupported. Them Monty only committed the First US Army to the attack, leaving his British troops in place.

The British did far worse in their first outing against the Germans. The Germans out fought and outmaneuvered them in France and sent them scurrying back to the UK with their tails between their legs. Only you British could frame a rout and forced evacuation by largely CIVILIAN boats as a victory.

You couldn't find decent troops and officers willing to fight in North America and were reduced to using mercenaries. You were holding a couple of cities, the rebels held the rest of the country, all of your supplies had to come by sea, or be looted from farmers near the cities. Once the French Navy arrived, the end was in sight.
