By "Greene" I mean Marjorie Taylor Greene and many of her consituents and like minded people outside her district.
Here is what Greene said about healthcare:
In a long post on X, Greene, the far-right MAGA firebrand, made it clear she was not in Congress when the 2010 law passed.
“Let’s just say as nicely as possible, I’m not a fan,” she wrote. “But I’m going to go against everyone on this issue because when the tax credits expire this year my own adult children’s insurance premiums for 2026 are going to DOUBLE, along with all the wonderful families and hard-working people in my district.”
“No I’m not towing the party line on this, or playing loyalty games. I’m a Republican and won’t vote for illegals to have any tax payer funded healthcare or benefits. I’m AMERICA ONLY!!!” Greene added.
Greene represents what the media called 'uneducated whites' in the aftermath of the 2016 election. They are not wealthy, and do not believe that the wealthy are vital to the economy. But they don't support Democrat's class-envy because they are not pro-illegal immigrant and they are not woke on LGBT for kids.
I don't believe that MTG's kids premiums are going to double if the COVID-era subsidies expire. Those subsidies go directly to the insurance companies, they are not deducted form premium prices. The subsidies are given with no strings requiring them to keep premiums down to a set level.
As they always have, the health insurance providers will charge what the market will bear. I've seen no evidence that the market will suddenly be able to bear doubled premiums after January 1st.
But MTG believes it and so do her kids. So do many, many relatively low-education low-skilled Trump voters. They are sadly no less gullible than Democrats and "not Democrats," so they may swallow this line.
I'm not talking about the right or wrong of things. I'm saying that as a political strategy, MAGA politicians with dreams of grandeur for 2028 should not ignore these voters. Nor should the RNC if it wants to avoid losing seats in 2026.
