Before Obamacare, I don't remember any restriction on how long a parent could leave their kid on insurance, as long as they claimed that kid as a "dependent."

Nor did most kids want to stay dependent on parents at the age of twenty-freaking-five. College students were notorious for not being insured. They were young and healthy and had better things to spend their money on. But once parents were paying for it, why not? So college students had policies that covered trans surgery and therapies,* hysterectomies, even if they were male, and age-related dementia, even though they were college-age.

*I don't know if Obamacare covers transsurgery reversal, which is growing more common?

You think Obamacare is bad? It is much better than the 2 or 3 health care options people had to choose from prior to Obamacare. Millions of Americans couldn't even get health care unless they were employed. Millions of Americans couldn't even get health care because of pre-existing conditions.
