In December 1942, a US Air Force Liberator B-24 bomber nicknamed "Little Eva" crashed in the Pacific Theater of Operations. Of the 10 crew members, only three survived after landing in northern Australia.

In general, this tragic story is interesting because one of the three aviators showed exceptional willpower and, after spending almost six months in the bush, survived where not everyone who was born and raised in these difficult natural conditions would have survived.

From the descriptions of the survivors' adventures:
"...On the fourth day, they killed a calf with one of their two .45 caliber pistols and roasted pieces of meat over a fire on the ends of sticks. They ate as much as they could and continued on their way. The men did not take any meat with them because they did not want to carry extra weight.
A day later, they had to throw away their pistols because they had rusted so badly that they were completely useless..."

Was the moisture in Australia acidic, or were the guns made of ersatz metal... Just five days in a humid climate and the weapons become completely inoperable? What about other places in the Pacific Ocean? Did similar incidents occur there, or is the climate there not as harsh on metal as it is in Australia?

BTW, Incidentally, a year and a half later, in July 1944, a Liberator with the same name was shot down over Germany. All crew members survived, endured captivity, and returned home.
