I don't think its really any different at top 50 type schools than any others. People fail, but it's because of "not fitting in" or "not being able to apply themselves." It is a real problem for "affirm action types" to make it at high tier schools simply because they have so little in common in life experience-skill's of most other students, and unless school's actually in session, they have nowhere to go. Similarly in state systems, I've seen kids with just no idea about how capitalist economy works. They maybe get through undergrad if you can keep them in class and handing in work, but put then in a law school or MBA or pharmacy program ... and no clue. It takes a lot of mentoring.

Well the SAT is not a high school test. Rather, its an aptitude test. But no one gets into a top 50 type school with or without the SAT unless they've demonstrated the ability. The argument against just using grades is that grading is not standard. But schools also look to things like science fair, and whether a kid's gotten a 4.0 while working 30plus hours a week.
