Well, super olds, who knows what this thing is for? It's almost impossible to guess. Invented in the USSR in the 20s, rediscovered in the US in the 30s.

It's a milk guard. It is put at the bottom of the pot in which milk is boiled. And then it doesn't form a runaway foam, it just bubbles up in big bubbles. Like boiling water.
And it also bangs, that is, it gives a sound signal that the milk has boiled.
The idea of a soviet engineer I.F. Ivankovitser. His wife experienced that the milk on the stove often crawled over the edge of the pot, and this prompted the engineer to think about how to make the milk stay inside, even when it boils over
