Zone1 Great article on RCC Idolotry regarding statues/idols/Mary

Those who use religious objects or symbols to focus on what those represent are not in error in any way in my opinion
O that there were such a heart in them, that they would fear me, and keep all my commandments always

I suppose that is possible. But I don't think it was mostly the case. People denied ability to read the scriptures or understand the Mass mostly stayed away from church altogether because it was a drag to them. At one point the Pope--I can't recall which one and don't have time to look it up--issued a Papal Bull requiring the people to participate in the Eucharist (take communion) at least once a year to get them into the church.

Yes, the Catholic Church used statues, stained glass, and other art forms as teaching tools for people who could not read Latin or their own language. For centuries, the vast majority of the population was illiterate, and religious art served as the "books of the illiterate," communicating stories and lessons from the Bible and the lives of the saints.

They justified it by saying it inspired devotion and that Moses set the precedent. The intent was innocent enough.

yes, and even now, as we all can read, we still value statues and stained glass windows and paintings because of their beauty. These are no idols.

so true-----just as the HINDU art is actually not "idolatry"-----it just sometimes seems
that way and is useful for islamo nazi libel

The only thing that might ever draw me on an overseas vacation would be the cathedrals. Our faith inspired some beautiful art.

Out of many, i would suggest Birnau on the Lake of Constance.
Not a cathedral, but a most beautiful church! 😍🌹
.

It's breathtaking! I would definitely go there!

One thing I like about it is lots of confessionals. It does not seem like enough people are going to confession these days. My priest confesses his sins once a week, but I can sit in the pew and see NO one making confession on the Saturday Mass which I attend.

Father frequently points out a lack of confessions when he's giving his homily, pointing to where the confessional is and explaining how it works, but there have been too many Saturday evenings with no confessions. My heart is gladdened in the last month or so, by seeing families making confession before Mass.

As a new convert, I was never adequately catechized, due to my advanced age and cognitive difficulties, so bringing my sins to confession is a learning tool. My priest is very patient with me as I go through the process, and I am thrilled when he tells me, "You've made a good confession" before he absolves me and gives me my penance.

So, I love confessionals!

a sorta interesting reality---Hubby and I visited an "exposition on islamic art" It was
situated near the NY metropolitan museum of art----had been sponsored by the Saudi
embassy. "ISLAMIC ART" ---well that's what they named it. Hubby is an artist.
MOST of the art consisted of daggers and scimitars with fancy silver filagree handles---
(don't tell anyone----the Yemeni fancy silver filagree was virtually the exclusive work of
yemeni jews----so hubby could actually locate which group did what). The figurative
art consisted of generic arabs on horseback swinging scimitars. Hubby was giggling---
but the crowd was hushed like they were having a HOLY EXPERIENCE. I was getting
nervous----we finally left for the Museum ------where we saw the "idols" ----serene
paintings of madonna and child. Different cultures do different art----based on ETHOS
