In this new Hubble Space Telescope release, you are looking at one of the most important aspects of the evidence supporting the General Theory of Relativity. Gravitational lensing provides evidence that the shape of space-time is affected by gravity. In the Hubble photo above you are seeing three galaxies lined up one behind the other. The furtherest away is 11 billion light years distant. That is, the light left that galaxy on its way toward this region of space 11 billion years ago. The light was about 60 percent of the way here when the Sun, Earth, and Solar System formed about 5 billion years ago. The rings are caused by the complex bending of light resulting from the shape of space-time determined by the gravitational fields between Earth and the in-line galaxies. Like a lens, a gravitational field focuses the light from objects behind it.
