If the government wasn’t involved with education, the majority of Americans, like Republicans, wouldn’t know how to read nor write.
Considering what Republicans write now on the USMB, it’s questionable whether they know how to read or write. Because what they write is such nonsense most of the time.

deanrd, as long as we're still abe to opt out and homeschool or send our kids to private schools, I'm okay with it. Not morally okay with it, to be clear, but just passively okay with it.

As long as I'm able to opt out, I'm good. Ha.

Certainly people are free to make rules for themselves so long as others aren't forced to abide by them at the barrel of a government gun.
The only reason people homeschool their children is because they want to control them.

I watched Phyllis Schlafly, the mother of the conservative movement talk about why she home school her family. So they would only be exposed to a man/woman marriage where the man is the man of the house and the woman does what he says. She still believes everything is about the Bible and all you have to do is follow the severe parts and everything will be right.

Then someone outed one of her sons and she said she was very conflicted because she did everything right and still had a gay son.

You can't control them. Not really. And the less you expose them to, the more likely someone can take advantage of their lack of knowledge.

Look at her son. Gays have been hiding from Christian and religious violence for a couple of thousand years. But her son couldn't keep it a secret? He either wanted her to know, or he was taken advantage of by someone who knew who his mother was. Him knowing how deeply religious she was, I think he was taken advantage of.

And it's those life experiences that growing children will miss out on and not know how to protect themselves. Because they were isolated. Their parents don't protect them. They wound them. It's called "hamstrung".

Liberal "logic"

If a woman wants to abort her baby, hey that's cool and her choice and you should shut up about it.

Also liberal "logic"

If a woman wants to home school her kids it's because she is an idiot who wants to control her kids and the state shouldn't allow that.
Yeah, because keeping kids at home and insulated from the rest of the world really helps in their development and prepares them for a really bright future. Everybody knows that. Right?

Do I want my kids to learn from adults how to interact in a society of adults or do I want them to learn how to interact in a society of adults from a bunch of other kids? IOW, home schooling can help a LOT of kids who would otherwise be marginalized and never achieve their full potential. Grow up.

That is completely irrelevant to you and other liberals believing a woman should have a right to terminate her baby but not to home school her. And no, I personally am not a fan of homeschooling.
Oh you’re mistaken. I have no problem with right wing women homeschooling their kids. They don’t want their kids to be in competition with the rest of the world. And they won’t be. They’ll be losers. But we need menial laborers.

Oh my God. These Republicans are hilarious. Scary, but hilarious.
They posted statistics showing that Americans aren’t as good as in math or science or whatever. And what they’re showing is the results of what kids from other countries have been studying, which is common core.
So they’re saying look, our students don’t do as well as students that have common core and we don’t want our students to have common core because it’s too restrictive.
And then they say our students should learn math science English and list the subjects which is basically common core. So what they’re doing is they’re arguing against common core and then putting up statistics saying this is what our students should be learning and the statistics they put up are the results of common core. They have no idea what they’re talking about.....again.

The majority of their lives will be spent interacting with adult peers, not child peers. And yes, government school IS all about teaching kids to sit down and shut up. When a kid has trouble doing that, they want to medicate the energy out of him, and if that fails they put him in special ed, where it's very difficult to get any kind of education.

Do you honestly think kid learn more social graces from other kids or from their parents? Who teaches children how to be polite, adults or other kids? Who teaches then to apologize when they hurt someone, their parents or other kids?

I'm not a fan of home schooling. I've seen FAR too many examples of it being done wrong, and I've seen zero statistics that prove that home schooled children outperform public school children.

Now private and charter schools with actual teachers, they are a different matter altogether.

It depends how it's done and for what purpose. If the parents are not fully committed to doing the necessary work, and if they do not use a quality curriculum, they likely will fail. Done correctly, however, it is very difficult to outperform a one on one teaching environment.

It’s not that easy fighting Republicans constantly. Look at what they did to Obama. Publicly announcing that they would do everything they could to destroy his presidency even if it hurt the country. How do you explain evolution to an older kid whose parents taught them that real science is magical creation?

Wow thanks for the link. I’m glad I read it. This is a really interesting part:

So how do the new Common Core standards compare to what existed before in the United States?

“The reality is that they are better than 85 or 90 percent of the state standards they replace. Not a little better. A lot better,” said James Milgram, a mathematician at Stanford University who sat on the Common Core validation committee.

.....

Pretty much what I’ve been saying.

Thanks again!

Some get stuck on common core and deny how pathetic our school system has eroded to. This IS due to the federal government's Dept. of Education.
It was established in 1979(?), and education started to erode after that.
Some on here will blame republicans, which in my opinion is juvenile. It isn't a party issue, it's a governmental flaw.

The United States spent more than $11,000 per elementary student in 2010 and more than $12,000 per high school student. When researchers factored in the cost for programs after high school education such as college or vocational training, the United States spent $15,171 on each young person in the system — more than any other nation covered in the report.

That sum inched past some developed countries and far surpassed others. Switzerland's total spending per student was $14,922 while Mexico averaged $2,993 in 2010. The average OECD nation spent $9,313 per young person.

As a share of its economy, the United States spent more than the average country in the survey. In 2010, the United States spent 7.3 percent of its gross domestic product on education, compared with the 6.3 percent average of other OECD countries. Denmark topped the list on that measure with 8 percent of its gross domestic product going toward education.

Spending, of course, only tells part of the story and does not guarantee students' success. The United States routinely trails its rival countries in performances on international exams despite being among the heaviest spenders on education.

These are the people you’re dealing with. They hate blacks more than they love their own children.

Your response literally had nothing to do with what I posted.

You simply can't refute the facts that many experts believe that Common Core is not doing what it was designed to do, and the numbers bear that out, we are no more competitive on the world state since starting common core than we were before.

It's yet another example of a government failure. Yet here you are screaming "the government needs more control over our lives"

Another thing that I don' understand about leftists is this. Why, if you care so much about the education of our children, won't you say "enough, we can't just continue to overburden our schools with the children of illegal aliens which hampers the education of our children in so many ways"

Just admit it Deanrd, neither you nor any or leftist actually gives a damn about the education of children.

Com·mon Core
noun
  1. (in the US) a set of educational standards for teaching and testing English and mathematics between kindergarten and 12th grade.
"the Common Core outlines skills and knowledge that public school students should acquire in each grade"

U.S. education spending tops global list, study shows

education | Ranking America
From your article:

Denmark topped the list on that measure with 8 percent of its gross domestic product going toward education.

So which is more? America spends more on education or Denmark spends a larger share of their GDP on education?

Do you see a common theme here?
Republicans whine and complain about education. But they don’t partake in it. They don’t want it. They don’t see the need for it. So they’re not really giving it a fair assessment.

Their lack of suggestions proves that they just don’t even want it.

deanrd posted in another thread that
GOP oppose Education and Health Care.

If you are GOP will you please vote in the
attached poll, what are you really against?

Education and Health Care?
or
"Federal centralized control" of these
instead of managing choices democratically
by people and states more effectively?

Can we settle this once and for all
what it is that Conservatives/GOP are opposed to?

Thanks!

Well let's see.

Dims have had full control of both education and health care, but it seems that they acknowledge that they are both broken, even though the ink on Obamacare is not even dry yet. These same voices want to sell us another health care plan?

Maybe instead of the Left taking kids out of class to protest guns, maybe, just maybe, they will choose to educate children better so that the US does not continue to rank 48th in the world in science and math.

Could you imagine what would become of our country if we just got rid of the schools?

Well the rest of the world is studying electronics and artificial intelligence Republicans are teaching their children that we were shimmered into being from dirt.
