GOP grows uneasy over voters' health care premiums amid shutdown standoff

CRs are stupid but they should not be a negotiating tool. Dems are wrong on this one. Having said that, Congress could obviate the issue by doing their essential function and passing the real budget.
Yep, Thune needs to go nuclear, pass the CR, pass the Appropriations Bills, and pass the Rescissions, then fix SS and Medicare...

Most people do not pay full price for their health insurance because they only pay a portion of the premium due to it being "group coverage" which allows employers to obtain it at a substantially lower rate than individuals could.

For the 6–7% who buy their own, the ACA subsidies that the Democrats are fighting to protect, are the only thing preventing premiums from doubling. Letting those expire would hit middle-class families the hardest.

(based on Kaiser Family Foundation 2023 data):
  • Employer-Sponsored Insurance (ESI): About 49–50% of Americansget coverage this way.
    • Employers usually pay a large share of the premium.
    • On average, employees contribute only about 17% of the premium for single coverage and 28% for family coverage.
    • So they are shielded from the true “full price” of insurance.
  • Public programs: ~35% are covered by Medicare, Medicaid, or military/veterans’ health programs.
  • Individual / ACA marketplace: ~6–7% buy their own plans directly. Here’s where subsidies (like ACA tax credits) make a big difference. Without subsidies, premiums can be very expensive.
  • Uninsured: ~8%.
Doesn't seem very "affordable".

‘Anxiety is rising among congressional Republicans that their party has no plan to address a critical health care deadline this fall that will result in spiking costs for millions of Americans – the issue at the heart of the deepening government shutdown crisis.

And some of those GOP members are offering a stark warning to their own leaders: Doing nothing could cost them their full control of Congress in next November’s midterms, calling for a plan that would address expiring enhanced Obamacare tax credits to be swiftly advanced once the government eventually reopens.

“I think the reality is, if costs go up under our control, it could have an impact on us,” Rep. David Valadao, a vulnerable GOP lawmaker from California, told CNN about the political effects of the health care fight. “I get that there’s some in leadership who don’t like hearing it but there’s no denying it.” “Just watching rates go up and pointing fingers is not what we should be doing in our position,” he said.

Valadao is among dozens of rank-and-file House and Senate members who have begun drafting their own ideas about how to deal with the expiring enhanced Affordable Care Act subsidies, which help millions of Americans afford insurance. Many of those GOP members — predominantly from battleground seats — are also directly urging their leadership and the White House to do something to make sure the tax credits keep flowing at year’s end.’

True Republican idiocy.

They wouldn’t need to come up with a plan if they’d simply agree to reauthorize Affordable Care Act subsidies, might even help them keep the House.

Republicans are incapable of sound, responsible governance.

I 100% think the Dems should fold and let the GOP own Healthcare costs.

Well, the cost of it for everyone should be pooled across the entire nation, that's fer shure.
Actually the cost for the subsidy should be from cuts, like the DOGE savings, plus "claw-backs" from democrat slush funds.
I was referring to 'free' health care as other developed nations have.

In other words Obama and the Democraps lied their asses odd about “Obamacare”. It’s totally unaffordable and was designed to fail, and you want the taxpayers to pay even more.

Actually you mean let the GOP fix what you loons fckd up
I've seen your posts. Your opinion is as about as important as the fart I just squeezed out. If you have a link or some data I am all in on debating. But you dont have any credibility for me to give weight to an unsupported opinion. Sorry.

As long as that slug doesn't have to pay he's all in

That's exactly the socialist democrat plan: force someone else to do the labor. They feel intellectually superior, so are immune from doing hard work. Even if the hard work is just a matter of "thinking" clearly and looking at facts and history.

They want slaves, not free people.

The GOP just wants to kill the expansion because Biden enacted it. The DNC, however, is being disingenuous in that it only rolls the system back to the original crappy one they created, but now want to blame the GOP for their FU in leaving that working poor doughnut hole in order to pay for not working poor women's abortions and birth control.

Nice try, this is on Johnson, and his constant LIES......a very trump thing.
Proven as factual.

(R) own the House, the Senate, and the POTUS.
It is up to them to negotiate....... am I wrong?
Not the Art of the Deal......FAIL on the (R), but sure, keep blaming (D).
Yes you are wrong. Johnson passed a clean CR out of the House. Republicans don't own the Senate. Leader Schumer has shut down the govt. Look at the votes.

Gov't is shut down. No negotiations until its up and running. Schumer's shut down is going to hurt his constituency and if it goes until Nov. 21, you can goodbye to the ACA. Tsk, tsk, tsk, maybe he and Jefferies will throw another temper tantrum.
It will end when air traffic controllers get up and walk out.

Nah, im a GOP voter and its all good. I have no issue with the GOP denying the demands of the loony dems. Their ideas suck. :dunno:

Very few will do that. That would be a career ender. No airport wants to hire a wishy washy air traffic controller who quits every time democrats throw a tantrum in DC.
