Gold as a gift

I have a friend coming up one one of those landmark birthdays who is a gold freak and I'd like to get a gift of gold. But I'm not sure what to get.

Where do you buy gold without getting ripped off and what should be bought? I had in mind a gold bar but that is probably too expensive.
