It used to be that tyrants would restrict the speech of its citizens in order to control the masses. However, in this age of Big Brother this line of thinking may be outdated.
Is it not better for tyrants to let people feel free to speak so long as they are able to document and track what people do and say than it is to oppress them to remain silent?
Tracking and documenting every word people think and say provides a great wealth of information that can not only detect threats, it can also predict behavior. The irony here is, if freedom of speech is used in such a fashion, it may lead to the greatest of all oppression as the information gets catalogued and processed and interpreted to be used to control them.
