Free painting software

I recommend downloading the following paint program. It has similar features to corel painter, but it is entirely free. You can get some lovely translucent effects like in watercolour painting.

How's it compare to GIMP, in your experience?

I don't use gimp, I use photoshop. But the mypaint program is compatible with gimp, and can be used in conjuction with it.
