"A Paris court on Monday found French former President Nicolas Sarkozy guilty of corruption and influence peddling and sentenced him to one year in prison and a two-year suspended sentence. The 66-year-old politician, who was president from 2007 to 2012, was convicted for having tried to illegally obtain information from a senior magistrate in 2014 about a legal action in which he was involved. This is the first time in France’s modern history that a former president has been convicted of corruption. Sarkozy’s co-defendants — his lawyer and longtime friend Thierry Herzog, 65, and now-retired magistrate Gilbert Azibert, 74 — were also found guilty and given the same sentence as the politician."
Luckily for this guy; being a former president comes with some perks; so he will get to spend his prison sentence in the comfort of his own home...Basically, the former president was trying to pump information from the prosecution about another legal case Sarkozy was implicated in....In exchange for this info, he promised the senior prosecutor a coveted job in Monaco.....spoiler alert: altho the investigation into Sarkozy was dropped; the prosecutor never got that Monaco job.
On top of that, Sarkozy will be going to trial again for his part in 50 million dollars worth of illegal campaign financing in 2012 and then another investigation into him illegally taking millions from Gadaffi in 2007...both of these things would be no big deal in the states -- another example of how Euros suck at corruption compared to us....
