every single instance of the illegal possession of a firearm is a federal crime and punishable by 5 years in federal prison and yet people caught carrying weapons illegally are not tried in federal court, not sent to federal prison for 5 years and the gun charges are usually some of the first to be dropped in plea bargaining

No one seeks to ‘ban’ guns, no one seeks to ‘confiscate’ guns – these are more rightwing lies.

Measures that regulate AR 15s and similar rifles and carbines – such as magazine capacity requirements and the prohibition of detachable magazines – are perfectly Constitutional, in no manner violating the Second Amendment, in no manner violating citizens’ rights concerning the possession of firearms.

Needless to say, most conservatives will ignore these facts of law and continue to propagate their lies about ‘bans,’ ‘confiscations,’ and ‘ending’ the right to bear arms – such is the reprehensible right.

I'm not an expert on the history of the 2nd Amendment or how it's been interpreted in courts.

I'm merely addressing proposals, which I have seen, wanting to end gun ownership, usually based on some archaic utilitarian philosophy or logic, a la Bentham or Mill.

Then when I posit the same logic in regards to homosexuals, rather than continue from a utilitarian persuasion, they change their stances, and revert to appealing to a quasi-divine authority of the "Constitution", I wonder why that is?
