My son plays Dungeons and Dragons, but not online. They meet at his college, every Wed.

I would never buy online games like Warcraft. Once I pay for the game, I don't want to be putting out more money. That's nuts.

I did like the original Warcraft, which was a game in itself and didn't depend on networking with other people.

Playing Zelda, or Mario, you could shut off and go out and play, an dnot have to worry about anything.

Just the other day a 15 year old suffered a stroke or something playing World of Warcraft for 24 hours straight.

In these new games there is a social standing that didn't exist in our old school NES days

My brother committed suicide. He came back from two tours of duty in Vietnam and 10+ years later over dosed on sleeping pills. I never understood what drove him to it and probably never will. He talked some about things that happened in Vietnam, but I never got the impression any of that bothered him enough to off himself over. I think he was depressed with life in general, and I don't know why he was about that either. He was quite intelligent, a member of Mensa as it was, and I think that played heavy into his suicide. He'd analyze every little facet of his life until he couldn't find another angle on it, and then that would confuse him why he couldn't dissect it any more. A ton of intelligence and hardly an ounce of common sense. A terrible mixture I guess. He called out for help but none of us knew what the hell to do. He drank too much, smoked pot, snorted coke, you name it, and we couldn't make him do anything he didn't want to do, like get help. So, one night he ended it. Still don't know why.

I think it's also weird how it is when people are commenting on a person that killed them self or even someone else too, that they were "such a nice boy/girl/person."

Wow...not quite sure where the rage is coming from here, lol. Not saying that games in the past didn't have an addictive potential, Shogun...just saying that the changes MMORGs have introduced are making them all the moreso...not quite sure that required a response with quite as many f-bombs but hey...obviously you feel more strongly about the topic than I do, lol.

I played Nintento as a kid. Loved it...would have played it for hours if I was allowed to. The difference as I see it is that I could save Super Mario...when I came back...my guy was where I left him with all the lives I left him with. In these games, if you leave you can "miss out" on things that are happening in the game.

You can play World of Warcraft like any other game and not get involved...or you can get super involved and make it a second life. I think it depends more upon the person than the game...

However...I think that these games are more easy to become addicted to because you're playing with real people working together to accomplish larger goals. So its combining that chat room quality with the fantasy world quality with the goals and accomplishments added together can spell danger for kids or young people without adults turning the game off from time to time.

In response to the end of your rant about why we started talking about games...yes, we're all aware that the teen killed himself in a forum, not a game...the conversation turned towards "online worlds" or how young people today are living more and more of their lives online...these games are a good indication of this...in fact we just had another thread about the 2nd life game awhile ago.

I don't think that anyone here is asking for these games to be shut down or anything...only that they are different from games in the past, and indicative of the fact that more and more people are finding enjoyment interacting with people online, in a variety of forms...and when that online interaction goes overboard...you see events like this young man killing himself online, with online witnesses.

Again...I'm not quite sure where your anger came from. But I hope you can take a breath, because no one else here seems angry about the conversation or the direction its taking...

I have played the game. I assure you, weather or not you think i'm cool enough makes little difference to anyone. Atari was the first, Nintendo was next, and then came Playstation, Xbox, Sega, all of them. Each time they came up with a new one it was bigger, badder, and better graphics with more engrossing story lines. I understand how attractive the idea of suicide can be. I tried to kill myself when I was 15. I didn't necessarily want to die, I just wanted to stop hurting. I wanted to stop seeing my mother beaten. I wanted to stop being molested by my grandfather. I just wanted it all to stop. and death seemed like the best solution.

I thank God everyday that I failed in my attempt because while I remember the pain I felt back then it all seems so distant now that I've established my own identity and life outside of that world.

I wish kids could understand that no matter how bad it all seems now it gets better if they make choices for themselves which MAKE things get better.

I could've wallowed in self-pity and I could've made choices which kept me in a life of misery. But I choose a different path for myself and now I'm happy and the pain I felt then seems to have happened to someone else, almost.

it makes me sad that so many kids give up on life before they really have a chance to live it on their own terms.
