Federal employee layoffs begin at Education Department

Department of Education staff will receive "reduction in force" notices Tuesday before nearly half of the department's workforce is terminated, Fox News Digital has learned.

Earlier Tuesday, a memo was sent to all Education Department employees informing them that Department of Education offices will be closed Tuesday evening through Wednesday due to "security reasons." Employees were instructed to leave the offices by 6 p.m. ET Tuesday.

Here we go....Let the rending, and gnashing of teeth begin....
Now they can sit on their asses, and we pay for their unemployment benefits. Brilliant!

It is cause that’s a short term payment, 26 weeks baby and that’s it :-)
If they can`t find another job in 26 weeks, it`s because they aren`t looking for one or don`t want or need one. In the 70s a lot of us laid off steelworkers went to Florida and came back with bogus job applications as proof that we were "looking for work". We knew that the steel business has ups and downs and we would get called back. People with Dept. of Education jobs are employable because they have skills and education. People being out of work makes you happy?

Just for context, let's say that an ED employee makes $75,000 a year and lives in Norther Virginia (not uncommon for someone that works in D.C.).

The max unemployment benefit in Virginia is $378 per week for a maximum of 26 weeks. That $9,828 to cover 5.5 months of bills when their normal income during that time would be $34,375.

Ya, I doubt they will be sitting on their asses.

It's not fun being unemployed.

LOL....so nothing different from their normal day then....Great, they shouldn't be upset then....

$268B annually representing 4 Percent of the entire Federal Budget - for the Department of Education and what did it get US?

  • Terrible Math and Reading proficiencies
  • Increase in violence against teachers by students
  • Increase in Bullying
  • More “Restorative Justice” and less Personal Accountability.

you'll get more of that without federal education support

I don't know about your division, but in ours we receive some funding for division operations including:
  • Grants for additional teaching staff at Title I schools (poor and under serviced).
  • Grants for support of Special Education students.
  • Funds for Title IV compliance.

Then there are other things like administering Pell Grants and student loan so that poor and middle class families can try to afforce college or trade schools for their kids.

To the states. All of it, everything, to the states.

I disagree with you, but it's okay. The teachers aren't to blame as
the kids sink further and further in the world in education as the
educational administrations grow. Yes, the blame is all on the parents. :rolleyes-41:

Some teachers are terrible, and undoubtedly there is entirely too much administration. But go somewhere public, sit for a while, and watch modern children and the way they behave generally.

BTW, the children are the last ones I blame, especially when they're younger.

Cool. Who us going to handle servicing student loans and the financial aid to the states?
Why do you think states sending money to the Federal Government to be then doled out back to the states somehow increases the amount of money available to be spent on the actual education of students?

There are 4400 employees at DOE. Have to pay those people, provide office space, infrastructure etc. Then all the employees who are employed at the state level whose job it is to deal with the bureaucracy at the DOE to make sure they get their money. All that costs money that does nothing to get kids educated.

The Federal Government provides about 11% of the money public schools use. (according to google) The vast majority of funding for schools is already generated at the local and state level.

As far as student loans. The Federal Government shouldn't be managing loans for education. We have a private banking system that can do that. If you are looking for an answer as to why we have the student debt problem we currently have look no further than the Government being in charge of it.

That's why we should just let Trump shut down the Education Department.

Cut off Pell Grants, Student Loans, funding for poor schools, and funding for SPED.

FAFO.

People think lots of money will be saved be cutting the salaries. Let's say the average salary is $150,000 and the total ED budge is $258,000,000,000. Eliminating the salaries is a small percentage, 99.74% remains.

Not like they did prior to 1978(?) when the Dept of Education came on the scene.
Like I said, "old system".

The Dept of Education existed prior to 1978.

It was part of the Department of Health, Education, and Welfare. The only thing Carter did was elevate the Ed Secretary to a cabinet position. Dept of HEW was then changed to Department of Health and Human Services after the change.

Dollars collected through property taxes and gas taxes go directly to the State and never reach the hands of the Federal Government.

(To be doled out back to the State at a later time......<<<< this doesn't happen)

Dollars collected through the State Taxes stay in the State.

The Dollars the States get from the Fed Gov is collected through FIT, and then yes, that money is doled out to the States.
