Federal employee layoffs begin at Education Department

The Lowest performing States, confirmed by many different independent research companies, are the Southern States.

The 2nd worse president in US history invented the federal dept. of education... that was Jimmy Carter... it was a total failure and now the USA ranks last in many subjects.... let the states run the education of their students... when the feds do it politics get smeared all over the curriculum....

No he didn't, the Department of Education (ED) existed before Carter as part of the Department of Health, Education, and Welfare (Now the Department of Health and Human Services). The head of the ED was simply raised to a cabinent level position by Carter.

The Federal government was already doing things like Title I funding, Special Education Grants, Pell Grants, Student Loans, Education Data tracking, etc.

This idea that Carter "made up" the ED is incorrect.

When a spending bill is not passed, they send all of the "non-essential employees" home.
They get a free paid vacation.
If an employee is "non-essential" what work are they doing?

Let's see:

National Parks Closed
Much of NASA is furloughed
Support Staff such as assistance with tax forms from the IRS, delays in new application for SS, Medicare, Medicaid, etc.
Issuance of Passports
National Flood Insurance applications and disaster relieve is impacted
etc.

"Non-essential" does not mean "non-important". I means simply functions that cannot be delayed, such as FAA controllers, law enforcment activities, food inspections, etc.

Education funds come from the states... in CA and AZ they are collected from property taxes... then it goes to DC and the states get the crumbs...
Answer this dummy... where does the general Fund come from?...

Property taxes collected in CA and AZ are not collected by the State and sent to DC. That's incorrect.

Property taxes collected in CA and AZ are collected by the State and distributed by the collecting agency (whether it be local or state).

Eliminating ED will not (a) change Federal Income Tax rates, and (b) will likely cause non-federal (State and Local) to go UP with the elimination of Federal funding for such things as additional teachers in poor districts and to meet Special Education needs requirements.

Anytime I talk to leftists about the worthless department of education, the best thing they can come up with is: Who's going to feed the children during the summer months?

I doubt that because the ED does not provide food and nutrition programs to schools, that is the Departmet of Agriculture.

I went to the DoE website to clarify what it is they actually do.

Next to nothing. "policy papers", "offer guidance", "distribute funds". They. Do. Nothing.

Meanwhile, I am an actual educator and I work like a dog, day in and day out, for 30 years.

I will share my opinion on the DoE with any teacher at work who dares to say a word.

I don't know about your division, but in ours we receive some funding for division operations including:
  • Grants for additional teaching staff at Title I schools (poor and under serviced).
  • Grants for support of Special Education students.
  • Funds for Title IV compliance.

Then there are other things like administering Pell Grants and student loan so that poor and middle class families can try to afforce college or trade schools for their kids.

I hope that "almost 50%" is soon followed by the rest of the DoE staff. All that would be needed then would be for congress to defund the DoE & we are 50% of the way there! Then it's defund the EPA & send it into history!!!!! With the fore mentioned two bureaucracies combusted our America can finally start rising to new heights!
Nope. We need an epa to monitor air and water to keep industry from polluting at will, which they would as they have no desire to protect human health.

God bless ya…

I think this is GREAT.

The number is about 2,000......so I read.

"I want to close up Department of Education, move education back to the states," Trump said in August 2024, while noting left-wing states such as California could struggle if he does eliminate the Department of Education. "Of the 50 (states), I would bet that 35 would do great. And 15 of them, or, you know, 20 of them, will be as good as Norway. You know, Norway is considered great."

I wonder which 15 or 20 States trump thinks "will be as good as Norway."

Let me guess.......trump is thinking of the Very Red States that currently rank near the bottom of the 50 States.

They rank that poor WITH the Dept. Of Ed. Basically running things.

Education clearly is not their goal.

Federal taxes, not specific to education.

The Southern states have the largest black populations.

No instead of race.

Do a correlation between education success and socioeconomic status.

Is it because southern states of more black people or is it because southern states have more low income people?

You're comparing states that are 90% white to states that are 60% white.

States with large black populations are going to have more low income people.

If the DOE is doing such a bang up job, all states should have equal education levels.

I'm not the one using race as the comparative factor.

I'm suggesting using socioeconomics as the comparison.

You sir are the one that jumped on race.

15th post
Federal taxes, not specific to education.
And it has nothing to do with educating our kids... when the states funded their own schools they had more funds to do it right... did you know that a department of education office worker earns twice as much as a school teacher in my state?... I want the teachers in my state to get raises and classrooms get stocked.... and grades to get better....

Race is a factor, considering that blacks are poor and uneducated at a higher rate than whites.

If the DOE is such a nifty deal, the education gaps between the states would be smaller. Right?

Is that because of genetics or is due to socioeconomic conditions?

That is not even close to the main problem.

Students with no determination, no drive and no grit because gentle parenting has basically ruined them. Parents know this, but rather than take accountability, they send their child to school expecting everything to be fixed. And I don't mean "academic" everything. I mean EVERY. THING. Teach my child to: put on a coat, tie their shoes, share, get along with friends, deal with disappointments, not meltdown when things don't go their way, properly clean themselves after the toilet, brush their teeth.

When the teachers say "Hey I'm here to teach your child academics", the parents themselves meltdown.

Doubt it? Go peruse social media and survey what parents complain about.

Every teacher knows this. Every one.
I disagree with you, but it's okay. The teachers aren't to blame as
the kids sink further and further in the world in education as the
educational administrations grow. Yes, the blame is all on the parents. :rolleyes-41:
