The Food and Drug Administration has updated the list of recalled sanitizers and it now includes over 75 products.
The recalled products indicate on the packages that they contain ethanol (also known as ethyl alcohol) but they have tested positive for methanol contamination.
According to the FDA recall notice, "Methanol, or wood alcohol, is a substance that can be toxic when absorbed through the skin or ingested and can be life-threatening when ingested. The agency is aware of adults and children ingesting hand sanitizer products contaminated with methanol that has led to recent adverse events including blindness, hospitalizations and death."
The FDA began warning consumers about the hand sanitizers made with methanol in late June and again updated the list with additional recalled products on July 2 and July 8, 2020. The newest updates to the list include products added on July 10, 14, 15 and 21, 2020.
