That sounds like justification to have the castle doctrine to be written into the Constitution as an amendment. After all if it's good enough for our congresscritters then it's good enough for us common folk.

You are absolutely correct about the early-20th-century American fascism movements. The Bund was a serious political force in this country, with very Stormfronty imagery side-by-side with Old Glory and busts of Washington, but it never found the cultural attachment or the political space it needed to catch fire here as it did in Germany. It then vanished in a puff of smoke when we joined WWII.

You are also exactly correct when you describe the characteristics of fascism, not just as a pejorative but as a definable concept in political science. It would help if more Americans knew what fascism really was; I see a few misunderstandings of it even in this 15-posts-so-far thread. Sigh.

As for Trump, I am hesitant to apply labels to people they don't apply to themselves (I find it stifles conversation) but there is no denying the similarities between Trumpism and those fascist movements, from a historical or political perspective. The powerful leader, the embracing of dictators, the anti-intellectualism and anti-elitism, the shameless lying, the rejection of cultural norms and institutions, the scapegoating of immigrants and liberals and the "America First" ... it baffles me why sensible lifelong conservatives are now embracing it all.
