I've always been intrigued by SEM's, but don't really follow it religiously (if you'll pardon the pun).....

My questions is, how do you get your hands on a one-atom thick piece of carbon? Or do you slice it off of something, and how does THAT work exactly?

Graphine forms as sheets, layered one on top of another, and the sheets come apart easily. That's why graphite works wells as a lubricant. I suspect, without really looking into the manufacturing process, that it comes down to just pulling sheets apart until one gets to the desired thickness.

Science, and engineering, is cool.
